Why earning more doesn't feel like getting ahead anymore. The changing relationship between work, wages, and what money can actually buy in modern life.

For roughly three decades after World War II, a basic economic promise held: if you worked harder and the economy grew, your paycheck grew with it. Between 1948 and 1979, productivity and hourly compensation rose in near-lockstep — both roughly doubling over the period, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Workers produced more, and they were paid more for it. That relationship broke in the early 1980s, and it hasn't come back.
Since 1979, productivity has risen approximately 65%, while median hourly compensation has grown only about 17% after adjusting for inflation. The gap between what workers produce and what they're paid has widened steadily for over four decades. The gains have flowed disproportionately to corporate profits, executive compensation, and shareholders. For most workers, the result is a career that requires more output, more education, and more hours than their parents' generation — while delivering less financial stability in return.
Nominal wages — the number on your paycheck — have risen consistently. But nominal wages are misleading. What matters is purchasing power: what those dollars actually buy after accounting for price increases. By that measure, the picture is much grimmer. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the real (inflation-adjusted) median weekly wage for full-time workers in 2024 was approximately $1,165. In 1979, adjusted to 2024 dollars, it was roughly $1,000. That's about 16% growth over 45 years — less than 0.4% per year.
Meanwhile, the costs that dominate household budgets have grown far faster than that. Housing, healthcare, education, and childcare have each outpaced general inflation by significant margins. A worker earning a median wage today has modestly more dollars than a median worker in 1979, but those dollars cover substantially less of the cost of a middle-class life. The paycheck grew. The life it can buy shrank.
Wages are only part of compensation. Benefits — retirement plans, health insurance, paid leave — represent a large and growing share of what employers spend on workers. The problem is that the structure of those benefits has shifted risk from employers to employees over the past four decades.
The most significant shift has been in retirement. In 1980, roughly 38% of private-sector workers had a defined-benefit pension — a guaranteed monthly payment in retirement, funded and managed by the employer. By 2024, that number had fallen below 15%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pensions have been largely replaced by 401(k) plans, which transfer investment risk, management decisions, and longevity risk entirely to the worker. According to Vanguard's How America Saves report, the median 401(k) balance for workers aged 55-64 is approximately $71,000. At a 4% withdrawal rate, that generates about $2,840 per year — roughly $237 per month. The retirement system hasn't disappeared. It's been individualized, and most individuals are not ending up with enough.
Employer-sponsored health insurance is the primary way most working Americans access healthcare. But the cost of that coverage has risen dramatically, and an increasing share falls on workers. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation's Employer Health Benefits Survey, the average annual premium for family coverage reached approximately $24,000 in 2024. Workers now pay an average of roughly $6,500 of that through payroll deductions — up from about $1,600 in 2000.
The employer's share matters too, because it comes from the same compensation pool that could otherwise fund wages. When an employer's healthcare costs rise by $2,000 per employee, that's $2,000 that doesn't go into raises. This dynamic has been operating for decades: total compensation has actually grown faster than wages alone, but the difference has been absorbed almost entirely by healthcare costs. Workers are technically being paid more — they just never see it, because it goes directly to insurance companies.
Federal income tax brackets are adjusted annually for inflation, which partially protects against bracket creep at the federal level. But state and local taxes often aren't indexed the same way, and many tax credits and deductions phase out at income thresholds that haven't kept pace with wage growth. The result is that a raise can push a worker into higher effective tax rates — not dramatically, but enough to erode the take-home value of income growth. Combined with payroll tax increases over the decades (Social Security and Medicare combined rates have risen from 6.13% in 1960 to 7.65% today for employees), the government's share of each additional dollar has grown, further narrowing the gap between gross income and spending power.
The traditional employment model — full-time, with benefits, at a single employer — has been steadily supplemented and in some sectors replaced by gig work, contract positions, and freelance arrangements. Estimates vary, but surveys suggest that 36% or more of U.S. workers participate in some form of independent or gig work, according to McKinsey research. For some, this is a choice. For many, it's the available option in industries that have restructured away from full-time employment.
Gig and contract workers typically receive no employer-sponsored health insurance, no retirement contributions, no paid leave, and no unemployment insurance eligibility. They're also responsible for the full 15.3% self-employment tax (both the employee and employer portions of Social Security and Medicare). A gig worker earning $50,000 has meaningfully less financial security than an employee earning $50,000 — not because the number is different, but because the infrastructure surrounding it is absent. The growth of this labor model means that headline employment numbers and average wage figures increasingly overstate the actual economic security of the workforce. When the gap is filled with credit, the problem compounds.
The average time a worker stays with a single employer has been declining for decades, particularly among younger workers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median job tenure for workers aged 25-34 is approximately 2.8 years. For workers overall, it's about 4.1 years — down from over 4.6 years in the early 2000s. Shorter tenures mean less time to accumulate employer-matched retirement contributions, less seniority-based pay growth, and more frequent periods of transition that can include gaps in health coverage and income.
Shorter tenure also means more frequent job searches, each of which carries costs: time, energy, potential relocation expenses, and the cognitive burden of uncertainty. The compounding effect of frequent transitions is a career that may show growth on a resume but delivers less cumulative financial stability than the long-tenure model it replaced.
These forces don't operate independently. Stagnant real wages interact with rising costs. Benefit erosion interacts with healthcare inflation. Gig labor growth interacts with declining institutional support. The cumulative effect is an economy where working — even working hard, even working more — no longer reliably produces the financial security it once did. The problem isn't effort. It's the system that effort operates within. And building lasting financial stability requires understanding that system clearly.
